Will’s Free Advice

As we know, the time and money it takes to put on a wedding can add up quickly, with each facet of the operation becoming it’s own little rabbit hole. From my perspective on the music side, things tend to get complicated (and costly) when the ceremony musician(s), the reception DJ, and the PA/microphone rental company are all separate entities with separate bottom lines, surcharges, and travel fees.

Thankfully, some wedding acts – like the Players – can provide every service and piece of hardware necessary to bring a beautiful sound to your special day. There are a number of upsides to this:

  • The music doesn’t break the bank. To be fair and honest, musicians and sound rental companies usually build additional charges into their fee for good reasons. However, fees can accumulate maliciously across multiple services. One act that can do it all can save you multiple hundreds of dollars in add-ons of this nature.
  • The band is familiar with the gear, because they own it. Often times bands are forced to work with unfamiliar rented equipment. This can cause confusion (“where’s the RCA output?”; “I thought this was going to be a six channel mixer…”), and occasionally essential gear for the band can get lost in translation when ordering from a rental company. A band that owns a PA, mics, monitors, DI boxes, etc. knows what they have, how to use it, and how to make it sound great.
  • The musicians are there to help. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve spent an hour setting up our gear and EQing instruments, then another hour setting up chairs, rolling kegs, or helping the caterer get the tablecloths laid out. Many hands make light work, and a wedding band that sticks around all for the whole process knows where and when to pitch in.

There is an obvious downside to all this: if the band is a dud, they’re there all day and you have to deal with them! Thankfully, the Players are here to steer you right, not beach the wedding boat. We do weddings and events of this nature because we’re good at it and, perhaps just as importantly, because we enjoy it.

I hope you consider us for your wedding, and I hope this information is helpful regardless of who you go with.

Best,
Will
